Clown Bible Shirt

When I first tried on the shirt, I discovered that it was just a little too small for me. So, my first step was carefully ripping the seams along the sides and up the back of the arms, where I could pin in some darts to widen the seam.

I started off by covering the left side of the shirt with the phrase "what a wonder to me / such a wonder to me" repeated. Next up, on the right side I freehanded "sometimes I regret it all / think the sun, moon, and stars would have been enough / beautiful, understood / not like you, out of my control".

On the back, I created patches of letters using the same fabric. Once these were sewn over, I took some paint for the shading and the words.

"Are you laughing in wonder? / are you laughing in disbelief?"

After it had dried, I didn't like the look of the painting on the right side of the front, so I decided to layer it to draw some attention away from my messy lettering. I used an image from the show itself, of Jesus during this song, and freehanded a simplified version of the shadows and edges. Using this, I cut out a template, and painted with a slightly darker grey to outline where I was planning on adding lines.

With my lines already clearly marked out, sewing over them with a darker thread and adding in the patches was much simpler. I also added a bit of red vinyl, hand sewn for my poor sewing machine's sake, for the clown nose.
